About Toyokawa Inari Betsuin (Akasaka,Tokyo)

Despite repeated disasters since establishment, such as the Great Kanto Earthquake and WW2, Toyokawa Inari Betsuin has repelatedly been reconstructed thanks to the sincere support from devoted votaries.

Toyokawa Inari is the Buddhist temple of the Soto sect, which enshrined Toyokawa Dakini-shinten. Praying at this temple may bring yourself and your family happiness and well-being, as well as prosperity in business and better fortune. Toyokawa Inari provides facilities that can be used for worshipping praying and rejuvenating your mind.

History

It is said that, in ancient times, the third son of Emperor Juntoku underwent a spiritual experience in which the deity Dakini-Shinten appeared on the back of a white fox with a rice plant slung over his back. The prince embodied this exsperience into the statue of Dakini-Shinten.

The statue was later brought to the residence of Ooka Echizen-no-kami(Akasaka Hitotsuigi, Tokyo) during the Edo era, and was finally enshrined in Toyokawa Inari Betsuin at its present location in 1887.

Basic Manners and Etiquette

Purifying

Following is a simple act of purifying your soul(heart) before worship.

How to purify your hands and mouth

Purifying

1.Take the dipper with your right hand and fill it with water. Pour some water over your left hand to rinse it.

2. Shift the dipper to your left hand and rinse your right hand.

Purifying

3. Take the dipper with your right hand again, and pour water into your left cupped hand and rinse your mouth

4. Tilt the dipper so that that remaining water trickles down The handle to cleanse it.

How to pray at a temple

1. Make a slight bow.

3. Should there be a temple gong, ring it firmly a few times. And Put your hands together calmly infant of your chest and pray quietly

About Honzan
Toyokawa Inari Main Temple

Formally known as Honzan Toyokawa Inari, this temple is called Empukuzan Myogonji for short, or simply Toyokawa-kaku. Constructed as a temple of the Soto sect in 1441(the 1st year of Kakitsu, Ashikaga era) by Tokai Gieki Zenji, it enshrined Dakini-Shinten, which was introduced by Kangan Zenji(1217-1300), as a guardian deity. It is usually referred to as Toyokawa Inari, and centered under the direct control of Toyokawa Inari Betsuin, there are many branch temples in areas throughout Japan, Including Osaka, Yokosuka, Fukuoka and Sapporo.
